Steve Ramsey demonstrates a DIY rustic sign project made from old pallet wood and a simple distressing technique.
Please be careful about the pallet wood that you use. Pallets are typically either heat-treated (heated to a high temperature to seal the wood) or treated with methyl bromide – a toxic pesticide linked to human health problems and ozone layer depletion.
Look for pallets that have the IPPC seal and an “HT” stamp, which means it was heat-treated rather than sealed with chemical pesticides. Avoid unmarked pallets or those stamped with an “MB” for methyl bromide.
The materials and equipment that you’ll need to make your DIY rustic sign are shown below.
- Pallet wood
- PVA glue
- Acrylic paint
- Paint brush / sponge applicator
- Spray paint
- Spar urethane
- Sander (optional)
- Bowl / jars
- Stencil letters
- Masking tape
Did You Know?
We produce enormous amounts of waste. Every 2 hours we throw out enough stuff to fill the world’s largest container ship with trash. That’s 12 container ships every single day, and 4380 container ships in one year.
